英语常用词点滴

每天都学一两个常用词，久而久之相信对英语程度的提高会有帮助的。

being 人生，身心
What is the real nature of being?
His very being felt the need of love.
He responded with his whole being.

choke up 激动得控制不住感情， 生闷气
When one speaker after another praised Ida, she choked up and couldn't thank them.
"What's wrong with old Nathan this morning?" "Oh, he's all choked up about Percy being promoted over him."

dare 敢(用于否定句)
And I daren't ask you,because I thought I must be wrong.
I scarcely dare think of it.

effect 实现，进行，产生。。结果
The pilot effected a take-off despite the bomb-pocked runway.
I will effect my purpose, no one shall stop me!
We effected the plan with a minumum of fuss.
A single glass of brandy may effect his recovery.

first 初次，开始时
I first heard of it yesterday.
When he first explained what he was after, I wasn't keen at all.

grant 承认
He would not grant that he was wrong.
I grant you that he wastes his money, but he always spends it on his friends.

go into 研究，讨论，谈
They went into it very thoroughly.
He said he would go into the problem in his next lecture.
We can not go into all the details now.

take a liking to 喜欢，对。。。很喜欢
He took a liking to Janice.
She seemed to have taken a strange liking to me.

hard as nails 非常结实，冷酷无情
After a summer of work in the country, Quentin was hard as nails, without a pound of extra weight.
The lawyer was as hard as nails. He felt no pity for anyone.

peep 迅速看一眼
She peeped quickly at the sleeping child.
The girl peeped round the door and asked us in.

puzzle over 苦苦思考
They puzzled over their arithmetic for an hour.
I keep puzzling over his strange behavior.

roar 吼叫，轰鸣
We heard the roar of a wild animal.
The roar of airplane engines announced a coming air raid.

shine 容光焕发
Her eyes shone with happiness.
The little boy's face shone when I gave him the sweets.
You can see by Karen's shining face that she is proud and happy.

thank one's lucky stars 谢天谢地
Ted was unhurt in the car accident, for which he thanked his lucky stars.
You can thank your lucky stars you didn't fall in the hole.

 take up with 和。。。交上朋友， 常与。。。来往(在一起)
When Victor went to London, he took up with some very strange people from Soho.
She's taken up with a man old enough to be her father.
 
save [spare] trouble 避免麻烦，省事
I just tell you for your own good. To save you trouble.
It will spare trouble if you pay this bill now.
We'll take it with us to save you the trouble of packing it up and posting it.

act up 乱闹，(指病，伤)发作，(大自然)狂暴，暴发
The children acted up in class.
The horses are acting up because of the storm.
My cold is acting up again.
He says his back is acting up again.
The sea has really been acting up for the past three days.
Mt. Vesuvius has begun acting up again.

wear out 使疲惫不堪，使累坏
Don't wear yourself out by playing too hard.
The poor woman had not sept all night and was completely worn out.

abandon 遗弃，放弃
I don't think that Abe would abandon his friends if they were in trouble.
The match was abondoned because of the bad weather.
 

bear 粗鲁无理脾气暴躁的人
She's nice but her husband is such a bear that nobody likes him.
Don't talk to Cedric this morning: he's like a bear with a sore head.

choose 愿意，偏要，宁愿，决定
She did not choose to accept my present.
You can make it very difficult for me to speak to you if you choose to misunderstand me.
No doubt her husband could have told her, but he did not choose to.
I chose to say nothing.

 

dare 问有没有胆量(做某事)
He dared me to fight.
I dared him (to), but he didn't.

effort 努力
We mustn't relax our efforts.
My literary efforts had not been very successful.
She knew that her efforts were useless.
They redoubled their efforts to build more storage.

first and foremost 首先，最重要的
He's written many different kinds of books, but he's first and foremost a poet.
I want you to remember to pay that bill first and foremost.

granted (that)/granting (that) 尽管，即使
Granted that he has enough money to buy the house, it doesn't mean he's going to do so.
Granting his honesty, he may be mistaken.

run [bump] into (使)撞上
He lost control of his car and ran it into a lamp-post.
The prow of the boat ran into a bank of soft mud and stuck fast.
A fortnight later he was walking down Chapel Street when he almost bumped into Pamela.

to one's liking 和。。。的口味，喜欢
No more sugar, thank you; it is exactly to my liking.
Her humor is not much to my liking.
She nosed through the thick book without finding anything to her liking.

nail 使待(在某处)
He nailed me in the corridor.
Surprise nailed him to the spot.
 
peep 显露出来
The sun finally peeped out from behind the clouds.
The flowers are beginning to peep through the soil.

qualify 取得。。资格
To qualify as a doctor you have to study a long time and pass exams.
She didn't qualify for the semifinals.

lull 使安静，使进入(睡眠状态等)
The mother lulled the crying baby.
The swaying motion of the train must have lulled me to sleep.
